The Most Important Taco of the Day:
A Tex-Mex
breakfast specialty takes root in Brooklyn
"Equally habit-forming is Williamsburg’s new Whirlybird, the first of its kind on New York’s caffeine scene: a serious coffee bar that doubles as a record-label gallery, with rotating exhibits of indie album covers, a couple standing tables, benches and tree stumps for outdoor seating, and a thoroughly Portlandian cast of characters milling about. It’s also the only place the U.G. knows where you may accompany your cortado or macchiato not with the usual muffin, brownie, cookie, biscotto, or past-its-prime croissant but with a hot, saucy breakfast taco. The combination is inspired, and makes sense ... a thing of slightly sweet, abundantly spiced beauty." // read more |
Immaculate Infatuation:
Whirlybird - review by Andrew Steinthal
"Whirlybird, a quaint coffee shop that doubles as the single most bad ass breakfast taco spot in town ... lists a total of two breakfast tacos on their menu, and also has a few special tacos every day as well. Heavenly Breakfast Taco #2, otherwise known as The Waldorf, is the reason you’re coming here. In one bite, our day went from pretty standard to pretty f*cking epic, and we don’t throw that “epic” word around as freely as some people do." // read more

Whirlybird Brings Breakfast Tacos To Williamsburg
"The legions of Brooklynites who travel to Austin for South by Southwest every year have come across a distinctly Texan (and distinctly delicious) specialty: the breakfast taco. Breakfast tacos (which involve some combination of scrambled eggs, chorizo, cheese, and peppers) have sadly been in short supply in Yankee territory, until now: meet Whirlybird." // read more

TONY explores funky new hybrids where tunes play a central role
"Bass player Jeff Bailey tasted his first breakfast taco in 2007, while touring with indie rock band Phosphorescent in Austin, where the Tex-Mex morning munchie is ubiquitous. This past December, Bailey brought the dish to Williamsburg via this three-stool daytime café and independent music gallery. For each five-week installation, Bailey showcases the discography of one indie label, playing the records on a turntable through vintage Bose speakers and decorating the space with framed record sleeves."

Whirlybird
"The menu at Whirlybird can be summed up in four words: breakfast tacos and espresso. ... For a mere three bucks, it was a good deal and the perfect size for a filling breakfast bite." // read more

Unique Coffee Shops in Williamsburg
"The eggs are fluffy, the chorizo is well seasoned, and the salsa adds a ton of dimension to the four-bite wonder. At $4 bucks a pop ($3 without chorizo), these tacos are almost too good to be true." // read more

I MIGHT HAVE TACOS: 3 Brooklyn Tacos We
Would Like to Send to East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo
"Whirlybird is a new Williamsburg taco joint opened by Jeffrey Bailey, a rocker (he played bass for Virgin Forest and Phosphorescent and Virgin Forest), and coffee guy (formerly of Oslo Coffee, the Williamsburg roaster). He decided to bring the breakfast taco concept to Brooklyn after learning about them tour in Austin, Texas. ... Doesn’t “taco and espresso” sound good right about now?" // read more
